Visual Basic Design Patterns VB 6.0 and VB.NET
by James W. Cooper (December, 2001 - List Price: $44.99)

Visual Basic Design Patterns VB 6.0 and VB.NET

This is a book for serious computer scientists … and programmers who want to take advantage of what they've learned in the last fifty years. "Design Patterns" isn't just a catchy name, it's a well established branch of software theory and design. But until recently, you haven't seen "Visual Basic" and "Design Patterns" used in the same sentence much. All this has changed with VB.NET's complete overhaul of the language and triumphant entry into the world of "fully object oriented" languages.

Cooper starts with VB 6 since there is good object support in that environment (if your definition of "good" doesn't require inheritance) but he really hits his stride when he puts UML (Unified Modeling Language) and VB.NET together with the structured approach of Design Patterns. The book also rates high on the convenience scale because it is still bundled with a source code CD to save you that download.

This is not a book for beginners to learn VB.NET or programming, and it's not a reference for Visual Basic. It's a book that you can use to break through to the levels of programming productivity and quality that VB.NET is now capable of supporting. If you're looking for a gift for someone who is a programmer (and therefore might already have something obvious like a general A-Z language book), consider this one! It's the kind of book that your programming friend has probably heard about, but has never actually looked into in any real detail. This may open your friend's eyes and get you real gifting points!

Applications: UML

About the Author

Make no mistake about it. James Cooper has the credentials to write a book like this. He's a researcher in the Advanced Information Retrieval and Analysis Department at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. To programmers, that's like Valhalla to a Viking warrior. At the same time, Cooper is no stranger to the writing biz since this is his fourteenth book.
