The VB.NET Books for Beginners

Most of these books have "learning," "beginning" or "introduction" in the title. You can depend on them to give you the basic language rules (or 'syntax') and explain to you something about what VB.NET is all about. If you're new to the language, these are what you're looking for.
Tim Patrick's Latest: Programming Visual Basic 2008
A review of Tim Patrick's complete introduction to Visual Basic .NET 2008. Patrick's book does the difficult trick of being both comprehensive, good for beginners, and fun to read. And all this in a reasonable size, too.
Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic 2008 in 24 Hours
This new member of the "24 Hours" series from Sams marches through Visual Basic like clockwork. It's a great introduction for anyone who hasn't programmed before and it would work well as the text for a beginning programming class. Experienced programmers will find that there isn't much here for them. The new features in VB 2008 are largely missing as well.
An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming with Visual Basic .NET
Dan Clark clearly states the problem to be solved by his book: "It has been my experience … that … what perplexes and frustrates many people are the higher-level concepts of object-oriented programming …" Read more about how his book deals with the problem.
Learning Visual Basic.NET Through Applications
Here's a fresh idea - relatively speaking: Code up some really interesting applications and when you're finished, you'll know VB.NET! It's actually not new because a lot of authors figured out that this was a great approach in VB 6, ASP, and other (now antiquated?) technologies. (Crooks wrote several of them!) But, surprisingly, there are just a few books like this written for VB.NET.
Programming and Problem Solving With Visual Basic .Net
Go to school on VB.NET! Seriously! These are text books for use in classrooms. But that doesn't mean that you can't use them outside a classroom for the same purpose.
Visual Basic .NET How to Program (2nd Edition)
Wow! One thousand, five hundred pages of instruction and a CD. With color illustrations yet! But read the whole story about this book ...
Visual Basic .NET For Experienced Programmers
Hey! What's going on? Isn't this the list of books for beginners? Why is a book with "for experienced programmers" in the title in this list? Read the full review and you'll understand.
Programming Visual Basic .NET
Here's a book that starts with not just one, but three of the proverbial "Hello World" applications and goes from there. There's a lot that you can get out of "Hello World" ...
Learning Visual Basic .NET
Jesse Liberty writes like he's an old friend explaining the best way to change the oil in your car - just someone who wants things to go right for you. His book is one a unique effort to introduce his friends to VB.NET. See what's unique about it!
Sams Teach Yourself Visual Basic .NET in 21 Days
Here's a review of two different SAMS "21 Days" books. These books are popular because they fit right there in the "golden middle" of technical books.
Karl Moore's Visual Basic .NET: The Tutorials
It would cost about $3000 - not including expenses - to attend eight tutorials even close to the quality that you get in this one book. And it wouldn't be close to as much fun! Karl Moore has written an eight ring circus of a book that starts with (pinching from countryman Douglas Adams), "Programming, Visual Basic, and Everything" and runs through the most popular and needed topics in VB.NET.
Introduction to Visual Basic Using .NET
This is a textbook from the traditional text book publisher, Prentice Hall, that doesn't look like a text book. See what it does look like in this review ...
Beginning VB.NET (2nd Edition)
The "Beginning" level book for VB.NET from Wrox is right in line with their tradition of great team written books. It was a good thing for Visual Basic students that this one survived the recent reorganization of Wrox.
An Introduction to Programming with Visual Basic .Net
The great thing about text books is that they're produced with the certain knowledge that thousands of students and teachers will meet eye-to-eye in the classroom over their open pages. And that creates sort of a guarantee about their content.
Beginning Web Programming using VB.NET and Visual Studio .NET
Programming for the web is one of the most popular uses of VB (and development in general) these days, so it's unfortunate that this excellent beginning text didn't make the transition when publisher Wrox was reorganized recently and is now out of print. It's still available on the secondary market, however, and that means that it's actually available at an even more attractive price.
