Think long, hard, and carefully if you choose to do anything different. Your users will be looking for menus that look like this, and they won't thank you if you don't follow this design without really good reasons. Microsoft has put millions into testing it to make sure it's efficient and easy to use. Take advantage of their investment. (The book follows this advice later in the chapter. The instructions in the book contain extra steps to change the menu appearance to match Windows standards.)

Chapter 4 has a really good "step by step" demonstration of how to create a menu and dialog windows. But when you really start to use these tools in more advanced programs, you will probably discover that the tools themselves are not the problem. Usually, problems happen because you want to do things slightly differently, or because things aren't working exactly the way you want them to.

(You don't get stuck on the highway, you get stuck when you try to get off the highway and go somewhere "off the beaten track"!)

So in this lesson, a "deeper level of understanding" is covered for these important tools. Finally, we'll present the upgraded Music Trivia program that was first introduced in Chapter 1. But first, lets make sure we understand the material presented in the book.
