White Cliff has done this one right! In the documentation, Karl notes that the idea behind their objects was that your program will usually find the right paragraph and then search around it to get the specific information items of interest. That's exactly the way my microfilm programs worked thirty years ago (except that I had to use Cobol). Someone with some real insight into what works designed this system. Note that in the program above, the title of the article and the date are found using the paragraph as a starting reference location.

The About Visual Basic poll is still trending heavily in favor of VB 6, so it's good that, even though this is WebZinc .NET, it still works with VB 6. But I have to point out that the handwriting is indeed on the wall for poor old VB 6. It works better with .NET.

For example, if you need to distribute a system written using WebZinc and VB 6, you need to include the entire .NET framework redistributable file with your program anyway (it's available without charge from Microsoft). And there are several other things to look out for as well. The good news is that they have considered this carefully and documented just how to do it.

Although WebZinc as a product has been around for several years, the .NET version is brand spanking new and was only launched on January 10. There are just a few raw edges, but I found nothing serious. The best thing about WebZinc is that they seem to have put most of their effort into designing their object model for the long haul. Even though they have managed to make it pretty easy to get started with WebZinc, the product has a lot of depth. They're clearly going after the heavy duty business market. That does bring up the fact that their pricing matches their 'big business' goals. When you can purchase a full version of VB.NET for about a hundred dollars, a single developer license to WebZinc costs four times as much. But there is a free evaluation version available for download with some standard 'nagware' built in. If you're a business and you need the things that WebZinc can do, Go For It! If you're an independent developer and you want to try out a great product, download the evaluation version and then find a client to pay for it! Here's the link you need.
